Local guide
Face east at dawn.

Every listing on the Sound sells the sunset. This shore's honest show is the other one. Olalla and the Gig Harbor peninsula sit on the west side of Colvos Passage and the Narrows, facing east across the water, so the day starts with the sun rising over Vashon Island and the bay, and on clear mornings Mount Rainier stands lit above it all. The best public sunrise spots: Sunrise Beach Park on Colvos Passage, named for exactly this; Tacoma Narrows Park, with Rainier beyond the water; and the public shoreline at Olalla's own boat ramp. House guests get the simplest version of all: coffee on the dock gazebo, watching it happen.
Arrive 30 minutes before sunrise. The color comes before the sun does.
When to go
Sunrise time swings even harder than sunset at this latitude. Roughly: 5:15 am in mid-June, 7:37 am in late October, and about 8 am around the winter solstice. That swing is the strategy. Summer dawns are warm, golden, and almost private, but they ask for a 5 am alarm. Winter dawns arrive at a civilized hour, with the sun rising in the southeast, straight over the water from every east-facing shore on this list, and cold clear air that turns Mount Rainier pink before the sun clears the horizon. A partly cloudy sky beats a clear one here too: thin cloud catches the color first.
The spots
The house dock gazebo: sunrise without leaving home. The house faces east, so the dock and deck look straight into the sunrise over the bay. Guests get the sun coming up over the water from the gazebo, coffee in hand, no drive and no parking lot. This is the view the house is organized around, and the reason our sunset guide sends everyone west in the evening instead.
Sunrise Beach Park: the park named for it. North of Gig Harbor on Colvos Passage, this county park holds about half a mile of east-facing shoreline and two miles of trails through 82 acres. From the beach, the sun rises over the passage with Vashon Island in front of you, and on clear mornings Mount Rainier fills the southern sky. Roughly 25 minutes from Olalla. Arrive in the blue hour and you will likely have the beach to yourself.
Tacoma Narrows Park: sunrise with the bridge and the mountain. This Gig Harbor park looks east across the Narrows: the bridge in the foreground, and on a clear day Mount Rainier standing beyond the water, lit from the side as the sun comes up. It is the most composed photograph of the three: structure, water, and volcano in one frame. Roughly 20 minutes from Olalla, just off SR-16.
The Olalla boat ramp shoreline: the in-town option. The public launch in Olalla faces the bay and the sunrise over it. No drive, no plan: walk down, watch the day start over the same water the passage runs through, and be back for breakfast. The house beach itself is private and reserved for guests, so the ramp shoreline is the public sunrise in Olalla.
After sunrise
The early start earns a slow morning. Gig Harbor's coffee shops open into a quiet waterfront, and our coffee guide covers where to go. Kayaks read the bay best in the first calm hours too, before the afternoon breeze: the kayaking guide has the launch and tide notes. Sunrise first, plans after.
Questions people ask
- Where is the best place to watch the sunrise near Gig Harbor?
- Sunrise Beach Park, on Colvos Passage north of Gig Harbor: about half a mile of east-facing shoreline with views to Vashon Island and Mount Rainier on clear mornings. In Olalla itself, the public shoreline at the boat ramp faces the sunrise over the bay.
- What time is sunrise in the Seattle area?
- Roughly 5:15 am in mid-June, about 7:37 am in late October, and about 8 am around the winter solstice. The light show starts 30 minutes before the sun itself, so arrive early.
- Can I watch the sunrise from the beach house?
- Yes. The house faces east, so the dock gazebo and the deck get the sunrise over the bay. That is the house's show: guests watch the sun come up over the water without leaving the dock. For sunset, the west-facing beaches in our sunset guide are the spots.
- Which season has the best sunrises in Puget Sound?
- Winter, for most people: sunrise comes at about 8 am instead of 5, the sun rises in the southeast directly over the water from the east-facing shores, and cold clear mornings light up Mount Rainier. Summer sunrises are warm and golden but demand a very early alarm.
